On November 21 we held our Provincial Vineyards "brand introduction" event at the Apolloni tasting room. A large turnout combined with Mike Miller's classical guitar music, Sundial Bakery appies and informal speeches by Alfredo Apolloni (winemaking) and yours truly (viticulture) made it a fun and informative evening. It was a blast! Thank you all who came out, the event exceeded my expectations in every way and you all made it so!

Complementary samples were offered of our very first release, a single-estate Pinot Noir. It was extremely well received with repeat purchases already been made by some of the event attendees.  A popular activity was the barrel tasting of our 2009 Pinot Noir enabling partcipants to compare a released wine with one that has just started it's aging process. Another popular way to taste our wine was by sampling the chocolate cake with the only liquid in it being our Pinot Noir. It was a delight!

Also, our 2009 Pinot Gris was given a sneak preview, It just blew us away with it's tropical fruit like nose and a hint of pear flavor. Bottling is expected in April. If it truly is as excellent as early indications suggest, it could be another tasting room event.

As always: try us, judge us, let me know!

Our web developer, Chuck Forbes, has our site up and running! Many thanks to Chuck for his steady developer hand. For those geeks out there who are interested the site uses Joomla for the content manager. That coupled with a template purchase made it a quick job. My first task is to learn how to manage the newly installed blog software extension.  I hope the blogosphere is ready for the deluge that's about to come from my keyboard. The site still needs considerable development, stay tuned!

French Oak Barrel - Issue! PDF Print E-mail
Written by Neil Frederickson

We received our very first new oak barrel (French oak), a purchase from a Napa, CA supplier. These babies are very expensive  (apx. $1000 each) and are only useful for 3 years after which they are considered neutral.

When the barrel arrived, it had a flaw in one of the staves that would risk a leak should it be used. After consulting with the winemakers it was decided that the risk of a leak needed to be avoided.  I was disappointed with the situation to say the least. Was this a case of the new kid on the block getting old and not so good inventory? As it turns out it was not. The supplier rectified the situation immediately by hot shotting a new replacement barrel at their expense. This was a case of "just in time inventory" in the extreme as it was put into service within 3 hours of it's arrival. If you ever need a cooperage referral that stands behind what they sell, send me an email. I have one for you!
