We received our very first new oak barrel (French oak), a purchase from a Napa, CA supplier. These babies are very expensive (apx. $1000 each) and are only useful for 3 years after which they are considered neutral.
When the barrel arrived, it had a flaw in one of the staves that would risk a leak should it be used. After consulting with the winemakers it was decided that the risk of a leak needed to be avoided. I was disappointed with the situation to say the least. Was this a case of the new kid on the block getting old and not so good inventory? As it turns out it was not. The supplier rectified the situation immediately by hot shotting a new replacement barrel at their expense. This was a case of "just in time inventory" in the extreme as it was put into service within 3 hours of it's arrival. If you ever need a cooperage referral that stands behind what they sell, send me an email. I have one for you!
